Our PrinciplesThe Purpose and Principles of HeartFlame Ministries
The name of this ministry is HeartFlame Ministries and it is located in Arlington, Texas.
HeartFlame Ministries was founded on 01 January 2011, in Arlington, Texas. It is the codification of ten years of discussions among friends and the spiritual call to begin a new work in the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex that was committed to the ideals set forth in Article II of this document.
In December 2011, HeartFlame Ministries was recognized by the State of Texas as a nonprofit corporation for charitable, religious, and educational purposes within the meaning of the Texas Tax Code, Section 11.18, and consist of the following:
- Advance the Thelemic religion by promoting and supporting small group ministry and related shared-ministry models in Thelemic organizations and groups through the development of new resources, networking, and training opportunities.
- Performing educational research on the Thelemic religion to provide educational and theological materials for Thelemites, Thelemic organizations and groups, and the general public.
- Provide support, education, and resources for Thelemic professionals and students to better serve our religious community and the general public.
- Organize charity functions, education, and operating models for public humanitarian works toward local disadvantaged populations as may be determined by observable need and available resources.
As a ministry, our purpose is to take seriously the dictates of the Book of the Law and to call all people to the Law of Thelema. This calling implies both introduction and encouragement to remain in a life of full adherence to the Law of Thelema. As such, we exist to reach the unseeking, marginal, mystified, and unmoved, and to encourage, equip, serve and sustain the greater Thelemic community in accordance with the Law of Thelema.
- The unseeking – those who have never been exposed to the Law of Thelema.
- The marginal – those who have previously been in a “Thelemic organization” but have left it for any number of reasons.
- The mystified – those involved in a “Thelemic organization” that is not pursuing or evolving the Law of Thelema as set out by the Prophet.
- The unmoved – those nominally involved with the Law of Thelema or its purposes.
A healthy ministry intentionally and zealously seeks a balanced ministry. Such a ministry results in:
- New adherents to the Law of Thelema through the work of this ministry;
- New commitments to emerging, growing, and established groups within local Thelemic communities;
- New growth of individuals under the Law of Thelema; and
- New leaders for tomorrow’s manifestation of the greater Thelemic community.
Stated another way, our desire is to call others to:
- adhere to the Law of Thelema;
- advance the greater Thelemic community;
- awaken the Law in daily life; and
- affect social concerns in conformance with the Law.
We commit to measure our success only by our ability to realize our conviction of being Thelemites and calling Thelemites into the fold (Liber AL 1.15; 3.46). We believe that Thelemites are individuals who adhere to a life of worship, fellowship, and service in accordance with the Law of Thelema (Liber AL 1.40).
In brief, we are in the ministry of changing lives. We live to influence the unseeking, marginal, mystified, and unmoved into unashamedly committed adherents to the Law of Thelema (Liber AL 3.39). Everything we do is measured by its usefulness, effectiveness and contribution toward this purpose.
We uncompromisingly and unashamedly strive to be:
In all things, the Book of the Law is our guide, authority and conscience in accordance and conjunction with our individual Wills. We stand firm where it stands firm and remain flexible where it is flexible.
Grounded in the Pursuit of Will
We acknowledge our complete pursuit of pure Will, both individually and corporately.
Passionate about the Great Work
We do not believe that the Great Work is merely preparation for living. We believe the Great Work is continually an essential part of life itself.
Authentic in Our Walk
Authenticity, integrity, openness and sincerity will define us.
Innovative & Relevant
The Holy Books of Thelema do not tell us how to present our message in any kind of specific manner. The Book of the Law does make it clear, however, that we are to find ways to effectively bring the message “to each man and woman that thou meetest, were it but to dine or to drink at them” (Liber AL 3.39); that is to say, not merely in a formal setting, but even in the most casual of endeavors. We believe this requires careful examination of everything we do—whether through tradition or innovation—and a willingness to change when necessary.
We value openness to change and flexibility. We believe such a climate is conducive to personal, relational and spiritual growth. We will be structured to allow for innovation, both personally and corporately. We strive to keep tradition in perspective. We constantly ask whether each traditional or innovative practice is optimally serving the purpose for which it was originally designed. If it is, we keep it. If it is not, then we work to find a better way.
Committed to Community
We believe life-change happens best in the context of relationships. Being part of our ministry and community requires a visible commitment to being intentionally involved with others in accountable and encouraging relationships. We are developing various Fellowship programs as our answer to where people can experience both the benefits of a larger community and yet enjoy the kind of relationships that only develop in small, safe settings.
Association in our ministry requires a tangible commitment to our purposes and our vision as outlined in our membership class. Everyone is welcome to attend our meetings and participate in our times of celebration and encouragement. It is our intention, however, to call all Thelemites in our midst into membership with this ministry. We do not, however, hold to any exclusive membership policies. We believe there are multiple types of communal agencies to appeal to the many different kinds of people in the world. We hope to facilitate cooperation and cross-seeding between communities to ensure that the Law is given to all in ways they can understand and comprehend it best.
We desire our fellowship to be a caring family that values community, informality, spontaneity, freedom of expression, humor, fun, commitment and loyalty. In our pursuit of our Wills, we provide an environment in which people are free to risk, fail and find encouragement from the community in time of need.
Focused on Service & Ministry
We believe that each Thelemite has a special gift or talent and should employ it pursuing their Will and in serving others, as good stewards within the greater Thelemic community.
Application of the Law of Thelema
We believe the Law of Thelema is to be taught and applied to living with equal passion. We seek to know and live the Law as revealed in the Holy Books of Thelema. We believe the best theology is applied theology.
We acknowledge the significant leadership authority that has been handed down from the Office of the Beast. We expect all leaders to exercise that authority by modeling honor, service, care for the greater Thelemic community and responsibility, so that others might be encouraged by example.
We do not desire to mandate or be identified by any particular form or practice in worship, but to create an environment that resonates with the soul of Thelemites.
We view children not only as the future, but as a significant part of the greater Thelemic community right now. This is, after all, the aeon of the Crowned and Conquering Child. Our goal is to raise Thelemites from the very beginning of their incarnation on this planet, so we believe our children are worth all the time and energy, will and love, we can invest in them.
Training & Fellowship
We believe life-growth happens best in the context of relationships. We value relationships where truth is spoken in love. Intentional participation in relationships with others at different levels of spiritual maturity is essential. While we provide many formal occasions for growth, we place a higher priority on the value of relationships.
Unity & Diversity
We embrace diversity but require unity in the essentials, understanding in the non-essentials and seek in every way to express love under will.
We agree that different organizations more easily attract others with similar preferences and/or life experiences and acknowledge that simply being who we are necessarily “targets” a certain segment of our society. Our desire, however, is that we will attract and accept a rich diversity of ages, life-stages, ethnic, religious, educational and socioeconomic backgrounds. We desire to foster an atmosphere of unity that communicates openness and acceptance of any that care to join us.
We wish to do nothing merely for religious effect but rather to live, serve and fellowship in an authentic and natural way.
In response to the specific dictates of the Book of the Law, we pursue a multi-faceted approach in helping reach people everywhere. Our ministry desires to take a servant approach in equipping and supporting various local organizations that have proven effective in their own pursuit of the Law of Thelema. We encourage members to serve locally, nationally, and internationally. In addition, we seek to involve our ministry in projects to communicate the Law of Thelema, and share our resources to empower the greater Thelemic community locally, nationally and internationally.
We believe excellence honors and reflects the Law of Thelema. We strive for excellence without compromise in all areas of our community and lives.
We believe in radical hospitality. We are not a social club. We are not a fraternity. We are not a process of instant gratification. We are a local Thelemic community constantly and consistently seeking to promulgate the Law of Thelema through innovative and open ways. We seek to constantly and consistently show humanity the Light, Life, Love and Liberty of the Law of Thelema.
We believe in passionate worship. We do not gather together to squeeze in the Law of Thelema into our lives. We seek to meld our lives into the Law of Thelema and exemplify that Law in action. Passionate worship is not connected to any style or form. We attend highly formal rituals like the O.T.O. Gnostic Mass or we enjoy the company of the open circle of pagans under the full moon. In all things, we participate toward the renewal of the individual and the community together. We seek to promulgate the Law of Thelema through our very lives.
Intentional Development of the Law
We believe in the intentional development of the Law of Thelema. We take our spiritual growth seriously. We do not lose sight of the teaching, ministry, and mission of the Law of Thelema. We are not afraid to initiate new programs of learning, knowing that some will fail while others will take root and grow. Everything we do is about content and relationships and we keep looking for the gaps and opportunities to create more in order to reach more.
Risk-taking Mission and Service
We believe in mission and service that takes risks. This aspect of our ministry is so vital for the simple reason that to do otherwise is to demean the value of the Law. This is the foundation of our ministry that turns our focus outward to the world. Missions and service is a deliberate effort on our part. It is part of the identity of the Law that we choose to emphasize.
We believe in extravagant generosity. We are not only generous inwardly to our own ministry, supporting that which is necessary to ensure our success. We are generous outwardly to our larger community and the broader world in which we exist. Our calling is to be a Light of the Law in our city, our country, and our world.
